Coffee Intolerance

Coffee intolerance or sensitivity occurs when your body reacts to the caffeine molecules found in coffee, as well as other foods and beverages such as teas, colas and chocolates. Whilst caffeine generally affects the nervous system as a stimulant, individuals can experience sensitivity to coffee in many different ways and to varying degrees. Some people may feel perfectly normal after a triple shot of espresso while others may feel a bit sick after just one cup in the morning.

Sometimes that morning pick-me-up just isn’t worth it if you have a sensitivity or intolerance to coffee.

Testing for coffee sensitivity

You can test for coffee sensitivity by taking a food sensitivity test. Our food sensitivity test is performed through analysis of a finger prick blood sample, which remains the most accurate method of testing.

At YorkTest, we analyse your IgG antibody response to over 200 ingredients, including caffeine. We analyze all IgG antibodies 1-4 directly in your blood to identify any food sensitivities, as well as gauge their severity. Following this, our team can support you with a run-through of your results as well as advise on how to handle your sensitivities and take back control of your diet. If you require more in-depth consultation, we recommend booking a consultation with one of our highly qualified nutritional therapists.

Symptoms of Coffee Sensitivity

The caffeine molecules in coffee transport very quickly throughout the body after ingesting. That’s why you get a sudden jolt of energy sometimes even before you’re fully finished with that cup of joe. While that may be what you’re looking for to get your day going, there can be some more serious side effects from drinking coffee, especially if you have an intolerance or sensitivity to it.

Coffee intolerance may trigger some of the following reactions:

  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Restlessness
  • Headaches/Migraines
  • Palpitations/High blood pressure
  • Fatigue
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

How to reduce coffee sensitivity?

The easy answer to this is to simply eliminate coffee from your diet to avoid the unwanted symptoms of coffee sensitivity. However, depending on your usual intake of coffee and how you prepare it, there may be other reasons for your sensitivity or intolerance to coffee. It could be the preparation of the coffee bean, how concentrated the brew is, or even the type of milk or creamer you use that may be the real cause of your discomfort.

However, simple elimination of coffee from your diet could still pose some unintended side effects, including headaches, drowsiness, and stomach pains, when you do stop drinking coffee. This may go on for a couple of days, after which you will start feeling better and feel back on track to a healthier you.

When you do decide to give up coffee, you may want to consider finding other natural energy sources to still get that morning wake-up that has become so entrenched in your routine. Golden milk, peppermint tea, or coconut water are beverage alternatives to your typical cup of coffee. You may also want to check out starting your day with a diverse set of whole foods such as oatmeal with apples and nuts to get your day off with a boost of energy.
