“Life has changed considerably for my husband and I. There is power in knowledge”

  • Kayleigh Henning suffered from bloating, constipation and abdominal cramps for over 10 years
  • As a result of her symptoms, Kayleigh withdrew from most activities and exercise
  • Over time, the 31-year-old became tired by her painful and irritable symptoms
  • After already consulting with her GP and gastrointestinal specialist, the IT consultant decided to look for other options which could alleviate her symptoms
  • Kayleigh came across YorkTest after her husband, who currently suffers from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME), saw great results after following a programme
  • The test revealed she was intolerant to cow’s milk, gluten, lentils, and buckwheat amongst other trigger foods
  • Kayleigh saw “immediate” results and no longer feels uncomfortable in her own body

Kayleigh Henning suffered from bloating, constipation and abdominal cramps for over 10 years. The 31-year-old IT consultant’s symptoms started in her early 20s; “I tried to never let it get in the way of life, but I was always extremely self-conscious about my body, particularly on days when I was more bloated than others. I had to be careful about what I wore, so as not to make it more painful – i.e. I couldn’t wear skirts/trousers that were tight. I often opted for dresses instead”.

Over time, the 31-year-old became tired by her painful and irritable symptoms. She withdrew from most activities and did not have the motivation or desire to exercise. “It could be quite stressful which, of course, only made it worse! I was consistently uncomfortable,” Kayleigh added.

Kayleigh sought advice from her GP and was referred to a gastrointestinal specialist “after suffering one (of a few) serious stomach pains”. “I saw the GP primarily for the constipation because this was where I felt it affected me the most. They put me on powder drinks to relieve it, such as Movicol and Fybogel,” she says. They also advised her to drink more water, eat more greens and leafy vegetables which, she would later find out, aggravated her symptoms.

“My personal trainer told me about YorkTest when I described my husband’s struggle with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME). It wasn’t until after he took the test and saw great results through his elimination diet that I decided to do it myself,”Kayleigh explained.

YorkTest offers a fast track elimination diet by analysing IgG reactions to over 200 food and drink ingredients. YorkTest’s Food Intolerance* Test which involves sending a finger prick blood sample to the company’s laboratories, revealed that Kayleigh had reactions to cow’s milk, egg white, lentils, yeast, buckwheat and gluten.

“I’m not surprised by cow’s milk or gluten and avoided them as much as possible, because I knew that they didn’t agree with me. I was surprised by lentils – I loved making lentil soup and sweet potato and lentil stew!” says Kayleigh. “I was extremely surprised by most of my borderline intolerances,” she adds. Her borderline reactions were garlic, avocado and rhubarb.

The full YorkTest programme provides one consultation with a registered Nutritional Therapist and additional content material to give further support. “I found the nutritional consultation very helpful. Particularly when it came to finding alternatives, especially for garlic! She was able to provide much more specific information on what to avoid based on food groups and gave some great alternatives and recipes!” she explained.

As soon as Kayleigh started her elimination diet, she immediately felt better. “As I had already removed gluten, wheat and cow’s milk from my diet, I found it relatively easy to remove the remaining foods. The one I found most difficult was yeast!” she added.

“I definitely feel much better, and I know when I have eaten something that I am intolerant to immediately. I haven’t been constipated since, I bloat much less, and I don’t experience the same stomach cramps, provided I steer clear of my trigger foods”.

“As I said, I never let it get in the way, but now, at least, in any activity or even everyday life, I am no longer worrying about how I look or feel uncomfortable!” Kayleigh said.

Not only did Kayleigh’s husband see significant improvements, but Kayleigh’s own quality of life has changed for the better since taking a YorkTest food intolerance* programme. “Life has changed considerably for my husband and I. There is power in knowledge,” she announced.

Kayleigh said she’s on the look out for more delicious recipes which work around her food triggers but admits, “I do eat the odd food I probably shouldn’t, but at least I know the reason for any discomfort. I am so much happier, consistently comfortable and have regular bowel movements, too”.
