Why should I take a food sensitivity test?
According to research carried out by Allergy UK, it is thought that up to 45% of the UK population has some kind of food sensitivity or intolerance.
Whilst these reactions are not as severe as allergies, intolerance has been associated with a wide range of disruptive conditions such as migraines, slow digestion, bloating, cramps, IBS, skin issues and fatigue which can naturally impact sports performance, self-esteem, etc.
What is the difference between a food allergy and sensitivity? What is Food Allergy
Food allergy is quite rare, affecting about 2% of the adult population. During an allergic reaction, the body’s immune system believes it is being ‘invaded’ and produces IgE (Immunoglobulin E) antibodies to fight off the food or drink ingredient it mistakenly considers to be harmful.
The body’s inflammatory response in this circumstance can vary from mild to severe and can affect one or more systems in the body, such as the digestive system, respiratory system or the skin. In extreme cases, the immune system triggers a response throughout the whole body, resulting in a systemic reaction (anaphylaxis) which is potentially fatal.
What is Food Sensitivity (or Food Intolerance)
Unlike allergy, food intolerance which is generally more common, usually involves a delayed biological reaction which, although often uncomfortable and unpleasant, is not life threatening. When you experience a food-specific IgG reaction or ‘intolerance’ to a particular food or drink, the body can produce a variety of inflammatory responses as it incorrectly identifies the ingredient as a threat.
These immune responses can be delayed for up to 72 hours and vary in severity and affect digestion, skin, joints, respiration, energy levels and even psychological health.
Understanding your own personal food and drink intolerances, and the effects they could have on your health and wellbeing, is important to ensure you make the best possible choices for your diet.
What causes food sensitivity?
When food particles enter the bloodstream, the immune system can sometimes identify these food protein particles as “foreign” and produces IgG antibodies to “attack” the food in question. This response is your immune system’s natural defence mechanism to ward off harmful invaders in the body which can create inflammation.
This inflammation could trigger bothersome symptoms, which may persist or develop in the body if they are neglected. Imagine if you stopped brushing your teeth twice a day. The more foods and drinks you consume, the more bacteria lands on your teeth. Through this neglection, over time you may see a build-up of plaque, bad breath and discolouration which may lead to problems, such as tooth decay. Food intolerance can build up in the same way and could create further problems as the root cause hasn’t been addressed.
