Extreme dieting can be very severe, often leaving you hungry, tired and deprived of nutrients. If you are looking for results that can be maintained, quit the extreme mentality. A new study has revealed that crash diets could now be a thing of the past.

According to one of the UK’s leading biochemists and yorktest’s Scientific Director Dr Gill Hart, a diet tailored to your unique food intolerances could contribute to weight loss, emphasising the impact food intolerances could have on obesity. These foods were identified by an at home blood test which measures food-specific IgG antibody reactions to 158 food and drinks at yorktests’ accredited UK laboratory.

The results speak for themselves with more than half (52%) shedding pounds within the first two weeks. 43% lost between 11Ibs and 1 stone 6Ibs, and 9% lost even more than this – despite the main objective for the majority of participants (87%) being to ease digestive issues or other symptoms they were experiencing.

Dr Hart, who led the study, explains: “These results are significant because, while the focus was how a healthy, balanced – but personalised – diet could improve health and wellbeing, weight loss was revealed as a very interesting by-product.”

“The process of food intake and uptake is complex, but it is accepted that obesity correlates with inflammation in the body. We can attribute the weight loss in this study to the digestive system functioning more effectively, and a reduction in the immune system reacting to foods it sees as hostile.”

There is also independent research into how obesity and related diseases can be tackled through dietary changes which improve gut flora and reduce intestinal permeability, more commonly known as ‘leaky gut’.

‘Leaky gut’ can cause chronic inflammation which can influence the brain’s ability to receive appetite-suppressing messages; creating a problem for dieters. Despite their efforts, studies have indicated that once overweight or obese, shifting the balance to lose weight is not as simple as just reducing calories. Whilst still important, calorie counting on its own may not be sufficient and extreme diets can also irritate the digestive system, which in itself can contribute to food intolerance’s.

Dr Hart says: “Evidence suggests a food intolerance-led elimination diet can help sufferers of conditions such as bloating, indigestion and IBS, among other complaints, and improve quality of life. But these new findings show an important link to weight loss too. There are countless dietary programmes out there, but none recognise the possibility that some foods, even healthy ones like carrots or lentils, buckwheat or limes, could be an obstacle to losing weight.”
