Hay Fever Spoiling Your Summer?
Hay Fever Spoiling Your Summer?
At the moment we are right in the midst of the hay fever season and for some
of us this can really put a dampener on our summer. The fact is that with allergies,
although we assume that our sneezes, sore eyes and generally feeling unwell are
down to just any old “pollen”, you may actually be allergic to different types
of “pollen”. For example did you know that one in four people in the UK with
hay fever are allergic to birch pollen, but different trees produce pollen at
varying times of the year and it depends which one you are allergic to as to when
your symptoms are worst. Allergies to weeds, other plants, fungi and even moulds
are also classed as hay fever but reactions generally occur later on in the season,
from June / July onwards.
There are several ways to help reduce your hay fever symptoms. Some of these
include:
- keeping doors and windows closed
- staying away from areas where there are grasses and trees, especially in the
early morning, late afternoon and evening
- wearing wrap-around sunglasses
- taking a shower and wash your hair after going outside
- dry washing inside - pollen may get trapped in the fibres of clothes and bed
linen
Of course there are other triggers for symptoms such as a runny nose and itchy
skin including allergy to house dust mites, pet hair and moulds. These are likely
to occur all year- round if you are in contact with them on a daily basis. It
is easier to avoid some of these triggers than others so to try and find out what
your exact triggers are.
The fastest and most accurate way to discover your allergies is to take an IgE
blood test. The YorkTest AllergyCheck is a testing service that tests your blood
against 16 of the most common environmental allergens that you may have been exposed
to previously. The number of people affected by allergies is rising every year.
