Caroline’s Creepy Chocolate Skulls – the perfect free-from Halloween treat!

Caroline’s Creepy Chocolate Skulls – the perfect free-from Halloween treat!

2 minute read time

It’s Autumn already and the holiday season is fast approaching. At yorktest, we may not have picked a Halloween costume to wear or a pumpkin to carve yet but we do have a recipe for vegan raw chocolate skulls courtesy of Biteappy founder, Caroline Oldham, that will make grown-ups’ cocktail hour or kids’ snack time frightfully tasty. That is, if they last until the party!

3333

If you’re not so keen on tricks, these vegan-friendly raw chocolates skulls are guaranteed to go down a treat. They only take around 30 minutes to prepare and are gluten, dairy and sugar free.

Just in case you’re feeling a little guilty about indulging in chocolate goodies over the holidays, think again as cacao, the purest form of chocolate that you can consume, contains many of the health benefits of dark leafy vegetables as part of your diet. The antioxidant power of flavonoids and essential minerals and vitamins found in cacao can support healthy heart functioning. High levels of antioxidants also protect the body from a build-up of damaging free radicals from sun exposure, pollution, cigarette smoke etc. Long considered a ‘happy food’, research has shown that cacao contains chemicals which are present in the brains of people when they are happy, more relaxed and creative.

Ingredients:

1 cup of raw cacao

1 cup of cacao butter

2-3 tbsp agave syrup

1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

1 tbsp dried cranberries (optional)

Method:

  1. Mix the raw cacao powder, butter and syrup in a bowl. (If you don’t have cacao butter then use coconut oil) you may need to melt it a little if it is too solid
  2. Add in the vanilla extract and cranberries if you wish, this is optional
  3. Pour the mixture into moulds and pop in the freezer for an hour
